The arts have hit on truly hard times. Of course, it is supposed to be tough producing art. You know the old saw, “the starving artist.” And many do, at least up to a point. We all know some actors who eke out an existence, for example. It’s not only the artists, but the institutions, in this case, the theaters that cry out for our support.
Theater, that is the not-for-profit variety, need financial help, but we need also to champion their freedom of expression. Their right to create art for the resistance to retrograde ideas hangs in the balance. If we champion artists who bring us fresh and exciting new work, we can also find that work at off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway venues where novelty often finds a home. Theater at the main stem, on the Great White Way looks to us to be the audience the arts deserve.
In short, go get a ticket to a show! Be a champ.
For information on what’s playing around town, try visiting the nycgo site. They’ll tell you when the next Broadway week is, and the upcoming off-Broadway week as well for half-price or 2fer tickets. There are many other places to find ticket deals, and we suggest a google of “theater ticket discounts” for the complete guide.
